DIY Tuesday’s: Make Your Own Terrarium
What is a terrarium you ask? A terrarium is a pretty little sealed (or unsealed in this case) glass globe or glass object that small plants can grow in. It’s perfect for those of you (like us!) who don’t have a ton of outdoor space to grow your own plants. Here’s a great DIY Terrarium instruction we found from the West Elm blog. Start to finish including clean up should take you only about 1 hour.
Here’s what you need:
• Tall glass jar
• rocks and stones as filler
• rocks and stones as decoration
• activated charcoal
• potting soil
• plants (ferns and mosses)
• preserved mossHere’s what you do:
Start with a clean, glass jar. Add layer of rocks at the bottom for drainage - about an inch deep. Next add a thin layer of charcoal to keep your terrarium’s environment healthy and mold-free.
A layer of soil comes next (option to add another layer of rocks for aesthetics). Be sure to leave enough room for plants when adding the soil, and keep the leaves away from the glass. If they touch the sides, the condensation could lead to mold or rot.
Add a little more dirt around the plants to create an even, level surface. You’re technically done but this is where you get to add the pretty, fun stuff! This blogger chose a hunk of rose quartz and a pink agate slice, along with some pyrite (fool’s gold) and a few polished stones. She also included some billy button stems (the yellow things). These are all totally optional so use your imagination when picking your items!
Terrarium’s are a beautiful addition to any house or office - they add the beauty of plants without all the hassle of constant care. Go forth and create!
